All About Big Bass Lake, PA

Big Bass Lake is one of three lakes in the community of Big Bass Lake. Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, Big Bass Lake is a private gated community in Lackawanna and Wayne Counties of northeastern Pennsylvania. It is a planned community designed by founder Lars Larsen. With recreational opportunities that include three lakes and its own ski slope, Big Bass Lake is the perfect family getaway.

Lake Natalie, Big Bass Lake, and Larsen Lake are all located entirely within the Big Bass Lake Community. Access to the lakes is limited to homeowners and their guests. There is residential development around the lakes, and short term vacation rentals are available. Amenities include Recreation Centers with an arcade, game room and sauna. There are both indoor and outdoor pools and a bathhouse as well as swimming beaches on the lakes. Guests can enjoy the clubhouse, and there are both tennis and volleyball courts on the grounds.

The Pocono Mountains receives an average of 60 inches of snow every year. In the winter, residents at Big Bass Lake can ice skate at the ice rink and downhill ski and snow tube at the resort’s private ski slope with T-bar. There is also a ski shop on site.

Summers are mild with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees. Fishing is very good in the spring, summer, and fall. All three lakes at Big Bass Lake are stocked with largemouth bass. There is also excellent trout fishing on the Lehigh River. Anglers need a Pennsylvania fishing license to fish either the lakes or the river.

Larsen Lake is an impoundment of the Lehigh River. In 1910 the Scranton Gas & Water Company replaced an existing structure on what was then known as Johnson Pond with an earthfill dam with a concrete corewall. Originally called Gouldsboro Dam, the dam became Larsen Dam and the reservoir became Larsen Lake. The lake is just less than a mile long with 64 surface acres of water. There is also a dam on Big Bass Lake.

Big Bass Lake is a quiet community. There are no gas powered boats allowed on any of the lakes. There is a marina and boat rentals, but only electric motors or boat without motors are allowed. Kayak, canoes, and sailboats are a great way to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the beautiful mountain waters.

Located in Gouldsboro, Big Bass Lake is near restaurants, shopping, several golf courses, and the NASCAR Pocono Raceway. Big Bass Lake is also next to Gouldsboro State Park. The 2,800 acre park has trails for hiking, biking, and cross country skiing. Ice fishing is popular during the winter, and anglers can fish for bass, pickerel, yellow perch, catfish, and sunfish. Hunters will find healthy populations of white tailed deer, turkey, snowshoe hare, and black bear, and there is trapping for fur bearing animals including muskrat, mink, beaver, fox, coyote, and raccoon.

Big Bass Lake is also near Tobyhanna State Park. Spanning Monroe and Wayne Counties, the 5,440 acre park has primitive camping, hunting, picnicking, and hiking. The 3.3 mile long Yellow Trail runs through the Black Bear and Bender Swamps Natural Area. There are also wetlands and boulder fields which are a visual reminder of the area’s glacial past.

With three lakes, ski slope and recreation areas, Big Bass Lake is a resort for all seasons. Its quiet private nature makes it a rejuvenating destination as a permanent residence or vacation home.
