All About Brookville Lake, IN

Nestled in the heart of the Whitewater River Valley, Brookville Lake is a gorgeous body of water providing water storage and many fine recreational activities along its 61 miles of shoreline. The lake is a short distance above Brookville, Indiana and 36 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio. The area is known as one of the most picturesque and historically significant in the state of Indiana. Its diverse offerings has made it a favorite wildlife viewing, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, swimming, picnicking and hunting destination for a large number of enthusiastic outdoor lovers.

Found on the East Fork of the Whitewater River, its source, the 5,260-acre Brookville Lake provides flood reduction, water supply, and a plethora of recreation areas. Brookville Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and authorized under the Flood Control Act of 1938. The earth-filled Dam’s height is 181 feet and spans 2800 feet. During the fall and winter, Brookville Lake is lowered to winter pool level to provide storage for heavy rain runoff to protect downstream property and lives. Indiana contracts with the Corps for water supply for the area.

Recreational use of Brookville Lake is a most significant value with excellent summer and winter fishing delivering excitement to anglers. The Lake has been stocked by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for a number of years with Walleye, Muskie and Striped bass. Brookville Lake is also replete with natural reproducing fresh water fish like large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, rock bass, redear, catfish and more white bass then you can imagine. The Lake is an angler’s paradise. The tail water area has also been stocked for a number of years with brown and rainbow trout.

Eighteen recreation areas surround Brookville Lake providing two large campgrounds, hiking, tenting, picnicking, eight boat ramps, four marinas and two swimming beaches. Bird watching, geocaching and hunting are also outdoor delights embraced by visitors. White Tail Deer and Wild Turkey are plentiful in this part of Indiana providing both archery and gun seasons. In season, duck and goose hunting is also quite good on the lake and its tributaries. Varieties of waterfowl, wading birds, song birds, and raptors to be seen in the Brookville Lake area include Teal, Mallards, Coots, Wigeons, Golden Eye, and Canvas Backs, along with greater Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes. Green, Great Blue, Little Blue, and Night Herons are numerous at Brookville. Osprey and Red Tail Hawks are frequent. You will, given patience, likely see a Bald Eagle around the lake and hear the night call of a Barred Owl. Finally, for all you dyed-in-the-wool geocachers, there are well over 50 caches waiting to be found.

If you’re planning on being in the southeastern part of Indiana, you owe it to yourself to explore Brookville Lake.
