All About Crooked Lake, IL

In a landscape dotted by glacial lakes and wetlands, Crooked Lake is in the aptly named Lake County of Illinois. Situated in the Chicagoland tourist region, it is where nature’s beauty meets good old fashioned American fun. Surrounded by the sprawling schemes of subdivisions and the wetlands, forest, prairies and bogs of many forest preserves, Crooked Lake is nestled between the charming villages of Lake Villa and Lindenhurst.

Spanning 137 surface acres, Crooked Lake serves the communities settled around its banks. The absence of public boat launches limits public access; visitors to the lake are often guests of community residents. The communities offer a wide variety of real estate options and recreational opportunities. Private beaches, boat storage, piers, tennis courts, playgrounds, nature preserves and trails are some of the amenities enjoyed by community residents.

A natural glacial lake, Crooked Lake is fed via a creek from Slough Lake (or Douglas Lake) during periods of plentiful rain. It drains out through Crooked Lake Drain, a dammed creek that flows into nearby Hastings Lake. Hastings Lake in turn drains into North Mill Creek and then the Des Plaines River. Crooked Lake has an abundance of yellow perch, bluegills, striped bass and carp that will attract anglers from all experience levels.

Activities abound on or near Crooked Lake. Golf courses nearby will satisfy golfers of all skills. Visit the prairies and woodlands of Duck Farm Forest Preserve, or the Sun Lake Forest Preserve with hiking, biking, cross-country facilities and opportunities to view the wildlife and nature of the area. For outstanding shopping, Gurnee Mills, one of the largest shopping malls in the country, is only a few miles away from Crooked Lakes’ communities. The Long Grove Historic District, settled by German farmers in the early 1800s is now a premier shopping destination for art, jewelry, home decor, wines and hundreds of unique items.
