All About Greenleaf Lake, OK

Greenleaf Lake is nestled in Oklahoma’s Green Country tourism region, an area that is home to over half of Oklahoma’s state parks. This artificial freshwater lake is located in Muskogee County, with a surface area of 920 acres and a shoreline length of 18 miles. It also encompasses an open-spillway dam at Greenleaf Creek that was completed in 1939.

The southwest section of Greenleaf Lake is bordered by Greenleaf State Park. This well-kept preserve encompasses 565 acres with more than 150 campsites, and includes amenities like a community building, swimming pool, heated fishing dock, amphitheater and nature center. RV campgrounds can be found nearby, offering 50 amp electrical hookups. Cabins (350 square feet each) feature air conditioning units, heaters, bathrooms, and kitchens. Additionally, many of the reserve’s original stone buildings are still intact – built back in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and German POWs.

Greenleaf State Park is associated with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. For the disabled, handicap facilities include a gorgeous lakeside cottage and an accessible year-round fishing pier. Anglers can expect to catch species like largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and channel catfish. A picturesque children’s pond – stocked with rainbow trout during the winter – has been dedicated to young fishermen aged 16 and under. Interested youths are allowed to catch a limit of three fish per day with no permit or paperwork required.

Swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, and fishing are just a few other relaxing ways to spend a day at Greenleaf Lake State Park; however, jet skiers should note that wave runners and similar vehicles are not permitted. Playgrounds, basketball courts, mini golf, and an arcade room are additional family-friendly attractions. Astronomy courses, campfire programs, hay wagon rides and storytelling are offered by the park’s resident naturalist.

Hiking the Greenleaf Lake Trail is a must for wildlife watchers and visitors who love the outdoors. The 18-mile trail in its entirety is meant for overnight backpackers, but numerous shorter treks are also ideal for day hikers. Adventurers are likely to spot wild pigs, deer, turkey and quail among these grounds. The longest legs of this journey are the North Loop (five miles) and the South Loop (eight miles), which can be picked up within Greenleaf State Park or just south of Greenleaf Dam. The paths pass by lands belonging to Camp Gruber, the Oklahoma National Guard’s Joint Maneuver Training Center. Portions of the Greenleaf Lake Trail are often used for training purposes – thankfully, only when it is closed to the public. Local terrain includes swamps, prairies, hills, and lake shores that are similar to lands in Western Europe. This provides ideal territories for practicing soldiers, engineers, medics, aviators, and more.

Greenleaf Lake is a relatively unknown escape that is incredibly rich in both natural beauty and history. Real estate properties and vacation rentals are available. Particularly perfect for families, a getaway to Greenleaf Lake is sure to leave you with long-lasting memories and a rested spirit.
