All About Heyburn Lake, OK

In the Green Country of northeastern Oklahoma, Heyburn Lake lies in a setting of gently sloping hills with a thickly wooded area that celebrates each season with a new backdrop of beauty. With 920 acres of water and 52 miles of shoreline, Heyburn Lake is open for fun year round, 24 hours a day.

An Army Corps of Engineers’ project for flood control and water supply, Lake Heyburn is located on Creek Indian land of the former Indian Territory. Many of the nearby towns started as trading posts and grew as the railroads moved through the area. Lake Heyburn received its name from one of these railroad towns, Heyburn, which was the post office from 1911 to 1922.

Today, Lake Heyburn has become a major attraction for outdoor recreation for locals and visitors alike. With three public use areas, facilities are easily available for boating, waterskiing, swimming, beaches, picnicking, hiking and camping. Multiple boat ramps give fishermen easy access to the catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and sunfish just waiting for their bait.

Heyburn Public Hunting Area is more than 6,000 acres of land around Heyburn Lake. With the ample food plots and water supply provided by the project, great hunting opportunities abound for squirrel, rabbit, quail, waterfowl, as well as, wild turkey and white tail deer. Proper licenses and permits are required to hunt in the area.

After a day of fun at Heyburn Lake, a short drive will take you to nearby Sapulpa, Oklahoma which boasts it is in the “heart of historic Route 66.” Listed as an official Oklahoma Main Street Community, the entire community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here you will find accommodations for vacation rentals and real estate opportunities.

Also a few minutes from Heyburn Lake is the small town of Jenks which is self named the “The Antique Capital of Oklahoma.” With the opening of The Oklahoma Aquarium in 2003, Jenks has grown into a great tourist area offering vacation rentals, a wide range of restaurants, and many unique shops in addition to the many antique establishments.

Of course, there is the rest of the Oklahoma “Green Country” to explore. Dotted with towns and cities, northeastern Oklahoma is still home to true cowboys who work on the unspoiled prairies, the proud Native Americans who keep their heritage alive with museums and colorful powwows, and bison and wild horses that roam the area. Green Country also offers casinos, rodeos, and numerous music venues along with museums, shops. Fine dining establishments and a wide range of vacation rentals from cabins, working ranches, lodges and inns are all just a short drive from Heyburn Lake.

With fun and excitement 24 hours a day, plan your to visit Heyburn Lake, Oklahoma.
