Shanty trail is 2.7 mile trail off Lookout Trail that passes by a small lake and leads to an abandoned log cabin. This trail eventually links to the Hastings Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail is a 200-mile multi-use trail which follows an old abandoned railway line. The trail is open year round to hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, skiers, dog-sledders, and snowmobilers. There are many stops along the way that are sure to catch your interest. Deer and moose also enjoy the trails around Lake St. Peter and it is not uncommon to see them come down to the lake for a drink in the evening. Rock collectors will love the minerals found in the bedrock along the trails.

Just north of Lake St. Peter is Algonquin Provincial Park, a 1,891,201-acre protected expanse of untouched forests and pristine lakes where you can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, and just about every outdoor activity imaginable. There are also vacation rentals of all kinds in and around the park if you’d like to spend some time exploring the area.
