All About Lake Tara, GA

Lake Tara near Villa Rica, Georgia in Carroll County is only 30 minutes west of Atlanta. Although many maps and some older residents refer to it as Treasure Lake, the lake and community are now called Lake Tara; to continue with the “Gone With the Wind” theme, two other nearby lakes are called Lake Scarlet and Lake Ashley.

Self-proclaimed to be one of the cleanest lakes in Georgia, this lake offers resort living, gated communities, and a public beach on the northern shore for family outings. Members of the Property Owners Association and resort visitors have access to multiple outdoor pools, tennis courts, picnic areas, recreation centers, marina, sandy beaches, nature trails, and, of course, Lake Tara where swimming, canoeing, sailing, jet skiing, wake boarding, tubing, knee boarding, boating, and waterskiing are enjoyed. Fishing for carp, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and sunfish is also a challenging pastime on the lake. One of the 18-hole golf courses is a championship course and home to the West Georgia Open. Vacation rentals range from single rooms to condos to time shares to vacation homes. Real estate in the area is available including townhouses, condos, lake front or lake view, and interior houses within the communities.

Besides the many amenities at Lake Tara, Villa Rica also boasts of it southern hospitality and small town life. Proud of its rich southern history, the community’s library is the oldest building in West Georgia, and the Stockmar Gold Mine is now preserved as a museum so that others can witness the things that molded the city as it is today. A quick drive on Interstate 20 will bring you to a wide range of shopping venues, dining establishments, professional sports, as well as live theatre entertainment.

A short drive from Lake Tara is the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. With over 35 developed recreation areas, outdoor enthusiasts will delight in the hundreds of campsites, picnic sites, multiple swim beaches and 530 miles of marked trails. With over 500 documented species of wildlife and fish, nature lovers will definitely want to bring their cameras to snap a few pictures. Anglers can choose from hundreds of great spots from relaxing shoreline fishing to the challenging fly fishing for some of Georgia’s trophy trout. And for those visitors who choose to simply sit back, breathe in the pine-scented air, and listen to the sounds of nature, there are areas for that also.

At Lake Tara, you can spend your mornings on the tennis court, lunch at one of the on-site restaurants, play a round of golf after lunch, and watch the sun set on the lake as you sit on your private deck relaxing from your day as the steaks cook on the grill. This is not a dream but a reality that you can enjoy at Lake Tara, Georgia.
