All About Lake Waukewan, NH

Lake Waukewan is set within the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, where its sparkling 928 acres lure visitors seeking to escape to a small town atmosphere. The lake bustles with activity throughout the year, as visitors and locals compete in fishing derbies during the summer months and ice sailing during the winter months. With the Town of Meredith located along the southern shore and New Hampshire’s largest body of water, Lake Winnepesaukee, a few miles further south, activities at Lake Waukewan are endless.

Lake Waukewan is a freshwater lake located in Belknap County with an average depth of 22 feet and a maximum depth of 68 feet. Water flows into the lake from Lake Winona, located to the northwest, and flows out of the lake’s southeastern tip into Lake Winnipesaukee’s northern Meredith Bay. A dam was first constructed along Lake Waukewan’s shores in the early 1800s, once providing power for industrial services. Now the dam controls the lake’s water levels, along with the water levels at Lake Winona, Snake River and the wetlands above Lake Winona. Lake Waukewan is also a source of drinking water for many Meredith residents.

Activities on Lake Waukewan are endless, made simply by the fact that there are numerous lakeside vacation rentals and real estate opportunities along the lake’s eight mile shoreline. Anglers have been known to flock to the area for its excellent fishing prospects. Keep to the early morning and late evening when casting out to find smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, yellow perch, chain pickerel and brown bullhead. For a different type of adrenaline rush, rent a motor boat and skim across the waters for a waterskiing or wakeboarding adventure.

With the town of Meredith located minutes from the lake’s southern shoreline, visitors find themselves enjoying lake activities during the day then finding the town’s entertainment at night. Find a romantic restaurant overlooking the lake and sip a glass of wine as the lake’s waters softly lap the shoreline. Meredith visitors can explore antique shops and unique boutiques or enjoy the many seasonal festivals throughout the year. For a family outing, check out Swasey Park near the town, where seven acres are devoted to a wooded retreat with picnic areas and trails to explore.

Those itching to explore beyond the Lake Waukewan’s shoreline will have quite the time choosing which area to seek out next. During winter, ski facilities are within a 30-minute drive southwest of the lake, providing daytime and night-time skiing and snowboarding, plus cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Winter provides a plethora of activities for visitors — ice fishing, snowmobiling, sledding and ice sailing are all great ways to spend your time on or around Lake Waukewan.

Look no further than Lake Waukewan for a vacation destination. Slip from your vacation rental and explore the lake by sinking your toes into the shoreline’s sandy beaches or by paddling out in a kayak or canoe. Don’t wait a minute more to find out what Lake Waukewan is all about.
