All About Little Creek Reservoir, VA

Nestled in the center of the James City County Parks and Recreation system is the 996-acre Little Creek Reservoir. With 40 miles of shoreline and an average depth of 35 feet, Little Creek Reservoir is ideal for fishing and family fun. Owned by the City of Newport News, the reservoir is operated by Newport News Waterworks to supply water to portions of the Virginia Peninsula and the historic James River and York River areas of Virginia. The watershed, which is relatively small, receives water pumped from the Chickahominy Reservoir. While this water is used to regulate levels in Little Creek Reservoir, additional water is occasionally pumped from Diascund Reservoir, located northwest of Little Creek. Constructed in 1981 and located in the Hampton Roads Region, the reservoir has since become a favorite fishing spot for the area.

On a hot summer day or a cool fall afternoon, fishing at Little Creek Reservoir is one of the more popular activities on the lake. However, it must be done from shore, pier, or non-gasoline powered boat, such as a kayak, canoe, or electric boat since gas-powered boats are prohibited. The effect of not having gas-powered boats on the lake is a quiet, serene fishing experience with low wakes and calm water. When fishing, expect to catch largemouth bass, striped bass, black crappie, sunfish, chain pickerel, channel catfish, yellow perch, and walleye. Bass is usually found in water 10- to 15-feet deep, where the water is cooler than along the shore. The clear water, steep banks, and limited shoreline cover makes fishing Little Creek Reservoir a challenge, but one worth taking. Look for black crappie on the outside edges of beaver huts and chain pickerel in the deeper waters.

Other facilities at Little Creek Reservoir include restrooms, a boat ramp, 140-foot fishing pier, picnic tables, and grills. There are nature trails on a 20-acre peninsula, as well as a play area, additional picnic tables, and more grills. Besides fishing, you and your family can enjoy wildlife viewing, boating, paddling, swimming, and hiking. Located on the reservoir is Little Creek Reservoir Park, part of the James City County Parks and Recreation department. It has scenic overlooks of the reservoir, year-round fishing, a hiking trail, boat ramp, two shelters with grills, a playground, and boat rentals.

Other parks around Little Creek Reservoir that are part of the James City County Parks and Recreation department include Freedom Park, Chickahominy Riverfront Park, The Greensprings Trail, Powhatan Creek Park, The James City/Williamsburg Community Center, Mid County Park, 2007 Legacy Hall, and Skate Park. If you are an historian, you will love this area of Virginia, where the 400-year history of the area is celebrated at Freedom Park. Dating back to the 1600’s, Freedom Park is the site of the first Free Black Settlement in America. For some outdoor fun, head to The Greensprings Trail to hike the same path used by early colonists, which links historical events and natural features.

Towns near Little Creek Reservoir include Chickahominy Haven, Diascund, Norge, and further southeast Williamsburg. Limited real estate is available directly on the eastern shore of Little Creek Reservoir off Church Lane, with vacation rentals readily available in Williamsburg. After a day of fishing or paddling, head to your vacation rental in Williamsburg for fine dining in one of the more beautiful small towns in America. Visit Historic Williamsburg to get a taste of early Colonial life before getting your fishing gear ready for another serene day on Little Creek Reservoir.
