All About Little Kennisis Lake

Lake Locations: Canada - Ontario -

Little Kennisis Lake is the smaller counterpart to Kennisis Lake, which is one of the largest lakes in the Haliburton Highlands of Ontario, Canada. Little Kennisis Lake is a relatively secluded lake for those who enjoy their privacy, but it also offers activities just minutes away at the more populated Kennisis Lake. The Kennisis River runs through Little Kennisis Lake and connects it to Kennisis Lake and to Wolf Lake. Little Kennisis Lake flows into Kennisis Lake via a narrows with a roadway bridge across the water. Paddlers travel beneath this bridge when water levels are normal, and boaters will find a public boat launch into Little Kennisis Lake. The Kennisis Dam is located at the outlet of Kennisis Lake and is monitored by Parks Canada. The dam controls water levels, because the Kennisis Lakes are feeder lakes to the Trent Severn Waterway to the south. Spend the day meeting new people and joining in the fun at Kennisis Lake, and then rejuvenate in the evening within the peacefulness of Little Kennisis Lake.

With about 570 acres of pristine blue water and depths reaching 140 feet, Little Kennisis Lake is home to lake trout. Grab your favorite fishing gear and head next door to Kennisis Lake for walleye, muskellunge, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, lake trout, yellow perch, white perch, carp, and northern pike. With any luck the perch will be hooked by your worms, and the bighead carp will be grabbing your soft-shell crabs. Kennisis Lake offers fishing programs to boost your knowledge and give you an advantage in an annual fishing tournament. Be sure to look out for Karl the Kennisis Lake Monster, a “large greeny-black creature” reported to inhabit the waters.

Little Kennisis Lake is surrounded by beautiful landscape known to many as the Haliburton Highlands, named after their uncanny resemblance to the Scottish Highlands and in honor of Thomas Chandler Haliburton. The Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve borders the lake and has 65,000 acres of lakes and groomed hiking, biking and snowmobile trails, special tours, outdoor theatre and a world-famous Wolf Observatory. Within the park’s boundaries wolves can be heard howling, and you can see bears, fox, moose, beavers, deer, loons and all manner of other wildlife. There are several lakes within the park for anglers to fish with plentiful amounts of brook trout and lake trout. The Wolf Observatory is home to a pack of timber wolves that roam the Wolf Centre boundaries and can be viewed by visitors.

Located north of the lake is the breathtaking Algonquin Provincial Park. It was established in 1893 and is the oldest provincial park in Canada. Once a lumbering area, Algonquin Provincial Park is now a hilly refuge for many different species of wildlife. The park was named a national historic site in 1991 in recognition of many heritage values including its role in development of park management, providing inspiration to inspiring artists, and giving Canadians a greater sense of their beautiful country. With rugged hills, beautiful lakes, and wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities, Algonquin Park offers activities such as fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, hiking, and camping. Visit the museum within its boundaries to learn more about one of the most popular parks in the country.

Little Kennisis Lake is located in Haliburton County, a place filled with quality entertainment. Spend a warm summer night listening to a concert and dining at a unique restaurant. An assortment of bands performs for the public year-round. Haliburton is well known for its love of arts and talented artists. Stroll through town and see the eclectic art galleries, studios, and museums. The Haliburton Highlands Museum is a great place to learn about the area. Find the inner artist in you with arts and crafts tours throughout the year such as pottery on the wheel.

Vacation rentals and real estate properties for sale are plentiful in the Little Kennisis Lake area. Take the time to plan a visit and you will not soon regret it.
