All About Lake Everett

Nestled in the northern section of the beautiful Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, 35-acre Lake Everett’s sparkling waters invite people of all ages to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Northwoods region of Wisconsin. The secluded Bayfield County retreat offers an abundance of recreational activities which include fishing, swimming, boating, picnicking and hiking.

Bayfield County is home to 962 inland lakes. Although the number of lakes is high, their combined 22,629 surface acres make up only 2% of the county’s acreage. From these facts, one can conclude that most of Bayfield County’s lakes, like Lake Everett, are small. Only 41 lakes and impoundments are over 100 acres in size and 672 lakes are less than 10 acres in size. Although the majority of lakes in the region are small, the sheer number of them allows people the opportunity to own and visit lakefront property.

Most of Lake Everett’s shoreline is untouched. A few homes can be found spread out around the lake and a four season lodge occupies 1,200 feet of shoreline and 70 acres of woods on the northeast curve of the lake. The lodge features a number of cabins generously spaced on and around the lake. Lodge guests and property owners have easy access to the lake. There are no public boat ramps, but carry-in boat access and use of the lake is allowed as long as you are not on private property.

Although small in size, Lake Everett has a maximum depth of 55 feet and is home to a number of sport fish including northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass and bluegill. You can explore the lake in your own boat or rent one from the lodge. The lodge also offers a fishing pier and floating dock which is great place for kids to learn the sport of angling. For those who prefer stream fishing, the area surrounding Lake Everett offers some excellent stream and fly fishing opportunities.

One of the biggest draws of Lake Everett is the 850,000-acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest where recreational opportunities abound. Over 365 miles of trails are maintained for snowmobiliers and off road vehicles and 230 miles of trails have been developed for non-motorized use including two national scenic trails and one national recreation trail. Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) trails pass right by Lake Everett. The CAMBA trail system consists of over 300 miles of marked and mapped routes through areas of striking beauty and peaceful solitude. Equestrian trails and horse rentals are also available for riders of all abilities.

For campers, there are several campgrounds in the area of Lake Everett. Nearby 180-acre Delta Lake and 170-acre Twin Bear Lake, two of the largest lakes in the area, feature spacious and wooded campsites and sites for RVs complete with electrical hookups. The campground near Twin Bear Lake features a store with groceries, ice, pizza, and camping and fishing supplies. Well water is available at pump houses. Both lakes offer a swimming beach, boat launch, and picnic facilities and are known for their trophy size muskies. ATV owners will find hundreds of miles of ATV trails located near the campgrounds. The majestic pines and many lakes and streams in the area create a wonderful escape from the drudgery of everyday life.

Guests of Lake Everett seeking additional vacation rentals and lakefront real estate, will find a number of fishing and hunting lodges, resorts, private homes, cottages, bed and breakfasts, cabins and motels in the area. Lodging, golfing, fine dining, and shopping can also be found in the nearby communities of Bayfield, Iron River, Brule, Ashland, Cable and Hayward.

Water sport enthusiasts seeking a bigger body of water may find Lake Superior, just 24 miles northeast of Lake Everett, to their liking. The Chequamegon Bay is an excellent spot for boating and fishing. A little farther up the coast, the historic town of Bayfield offers many unique shops and is the access point to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Big Bay State Park. A ferry routinely takes visitors to Madeline Island or on an inter-island tour where you can stop at any one of 21 islands on the lake. Lake Superior kayak trips can also be arranged in the city of Bayfield.

If winter sports are more of your idea of fun and adventure, Lake Everett offers ice fishing and ice skating. Snowshoeing is a winter sport that is gaining in popularity. Snowshoe rentals are available from several outfitters in the area and allow you to soundlessly explore the area and enjoy a self-guided wildlife experience. Cross-country ski trails can also be found and hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails will delight the diehard snowmobilers. Exploring the area from the back of a horse drawn sleigh is also great way to take in the snow covered wonderland.

If a wilderness getaway is what you seek, Lake Everett is just the place. Near the shores of Lake Superior and tucked away in the seclusion of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, you can enjoy the sound of seagulls or the sound of loons, or both. Paddle the waters, hike, bike or ride the woodland trails and end your day where the setting sun casts it colors across Lake Everett.
