Pike Lake, located near Hartford, Wisconsin in Washington County, is a natural glacial-formed lake with 522 acres of water. Although Pike Lake is a natural lake, Pike Lake Dam was constructed on the Rubicon River near the lake’s outlet. The dam was built to help regulate flood control. Pike Lake is surrounded by rugged mixed woods in the Southern Savannah Region of southeastern Wisconsin, about 25 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Pike Lake is a delightful retreat for boating, fishing, and picnicking.

Traveling to the eastern shore of Pike Lake, visitors will find the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. A short hike up Powder Hill, which is the second highest point in southeastern Wisconsin, will give hikers a stunning view of Pike Lake and the Kettle Moraine State Forest. A 60-foot observation tower was built on top of Powder Hill in 2001 and gives visitors an added viewpoint of the picturesque hardwood and evergreen lined lake. Additional hiking trails around Pike Lake give nature lovers an assortment of wildlife to enjoy. Hiking trails meander through marshes, forest, prairies and glacial terrain. After the vibrant autumn colors fade away and snow has fallen along the hiking paths, hikers replace their boots with cross-country skis.

The warm days of summer provide ample recreational activities around Pike Lake. Visitors can take a dip in the cool refreshing waters at the swimming beach located at Pike Lake State Park. Pike Lake State Park covers approximately 700 acres and features public campgrounds, picnic areas and playgrounds. Campgrounds are open from spring until fall and offer a picnic table, fire pit and tent pad at each campsite. Most campsites are wooded while some of the sites are in the open.

Pike Lake was named after its excellent walleye pike fishing. In addition to walleye pike, anglers can cast in their line for other game fish which include northern pike, pan fish and bass. Anglers may choose to fish from the banks of Pike Lake or from their boats which can be launched from a couple of boat ramps located around the lake. However, there are no boat ramps located in Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Pike Lake visitors may want to take some time to sightsee in nearby Hartford and Milwaukee. Both Hartford and Milwaukee offer historic downtowns and exciting places to explore such as museums and old buildings. While in Milwaukee sightseers can take a break and enjoy a round of golf. One of the sights to see in Hartford is the Shrine of Mary at Holy Hill. Visitors from all over the world travel to Holy Hill in hopes of witnessing mysterious healing powers the church is believed to have, while others go to enjoy the wonderful view from the steeple.

Scenic Pike Lake is a delightful getaway, with lakefront homes available as vacation rentals. Lakefront and lake-access homes are also available for sale for those who want to enjoy lake living year round.
